You know I had somewhat the same kind of experience. I kept asking my husband for a quail. I wanted a bird that would sing “Bob-white” every night in my backyard. I even prayed about it. I shouldn’t have been amazed but I was when I saw a Bob-White (quail) walk below my front window. My husband never brought me one but God did and the bird stayed around for a few days and then disappeared. I will never forget those couple of days. I was so appreciative! Realizing where the bird came from and who was listening to me was an awe-inspiring moment for me!
I love your stories so I look forward to reading more.

God did not promise us a life of smooth sailing but He did promise He would always be there.
He does not give us more than we can handle. It will get easier with time.
How awesome of you to share your grief. Some people have not been there so cannot relate, but the others that have appreciate your openness. You go where others wish they could!
Carole
I can relate to your entry due to raising two boys also. When my youngest started approaching the age where he sought Dad out more than me, I did not enjoy it. We were so close and it seemed as if he were drifting away.
Today he is older and still close to me in ways. He is a very private person so does not share as much as he used to. But I am his mother so I will just have joy in that!

What a truly beautiful painting! And I love the scripture that goes with it. Beautiful!
I have always loved that video. As a Momma you just can’t help but laugh.
I’m sure your butterflies are beautiful.
Funny! I totally did not hear him belch, so no worries. Can’t wait to read this to my husband, he’ll get a kick out of this!
Mortified by belching???
I seem to remember it happening after several homemade ice cream events on a hill on Continental Dr.Surely it wasn’t just the all male “cloths”.
A “rebellious” ???, Sophia.that tests the memory !
Hi Skip! Yes! I think belching (during prayer)was the surprise here!
But you would think with brothers and sons I would be so used to it by now!!
Sophia,

Hey, sophia — great idea about having your kids do chores to help pay for your sponsored child. What a creative idea — I bet your boys wish you weren’t so darn creative! xoxo – K
This is really kind of you! Thank you so much. I’ve been a little lax keeping up on my gratitude journal lately and this is a great reminder.
I am a long time friend of your Mom and Dad and your Mom sent me 4 of your note cards with butterflies on them. They are beautifuland I will use them soon. Your web site is also good and I will look through it more when I have more time. Diane
I enjoyed your writing style and I’ve added you to my Reader. Keep these posts coming.
Hi! I was doing a little on-line search, and I came upon the title of your blog post. I’ve got a big heart for raising mission-minded kids too (I’m a homeschooling mommy of 7 and just returned from a mission outreach to Africa with my teenage daughter). Come check out my “Mission-Minded” website, or my new blog.
Blessings to you!
Ann
Thanks for letting me know of your inspiring site! I wll be looking into the book for teens on doing hard things. As soon as my webdesigner gets the links added back to the site, you will be on the list!
God Bless you and all you are doing!
Sophia
Sophia,
I hope that you enjoy the book and thanks for the kind words.
If you want would love for as many people as possible to buy the book on 8-8-08 at Amazon.com!
Thanks

Okay, I just had to leave a comment. We homeschool as well. We have three boys 1, 3, and 5. We just started homeschooling our 5 year old in July. The picture is the real reason I had to leave a comment. I just did a site called What Do Snails Eat, and that snail just made me laugh. Thanks for sharing the photo!
What wonderful animals! I would love to learn how to make those. My kids would love it.
I too, heard this song on the radio …. I felt it was my mother’s way of speaking to me from Heaven, telling me that everything will be okay. (I lost my significant other, my mother, my job … all within the last year). Through my search, I found your website, and the info regarding the song … blessings to you.
I heard this song while on holiday in Greece last July, and I had just been to a conference for Young people in Liverpool, where I had the priviledge to meet wonderful people who are doing amazing things to improve our world. I am thinking specially of three brave-hearted Burmese students that I met. Well, this song made me think of the people in that sad country of Burma, they have been going through so much struggle and for too long! The song gave me new HOPE that all peoples may be safe in the arms of our GOD, despite all sorts of storms!
I am so thankful that you have posted this. It’s just nice to know that your not alone in the world with situations like this. I am having a hard time finding help with the emotional part and having a husband that can’t get over his “daddy denial” (as we like to call it) makes it a little tougher too. So many people ask me quite often “What’s wrong with him”, but yet it seems as if no one really wants to listen. So thank you
Angie (better known as) “Jimmy’s MoM”
What amazing animals you have in your yard! I loved looking at the photos!
Great pictures Sophia. I also love watching the hummingbirds and any other bird that lands in my yard.
This made me curious to know what your story is. It is wonderful that you are such a blessing to others!
Thank you Sophia! You are so sweet. I just realized that I had never updated your link info. I’m so, so, sorry about that. I just went in and did it now.
Your blog is beautiful!
A wonderful backdrop for your gorgeous art!
Oh wow! It sounds like it’s going to be a gorgeous painting.
What a wonderful way to portray hope!
Have fun!
Oh! Oh!
The plates are great! I love them and think they’ll do very well for you. What a wonderful way to have usable art that will be a blessing daily.
((Hugs))
Sophia, I love the plates and I already have in mind how many I would like to have. You are awesome, as always. How do we order our own family names and plates? p.s. Boy, I wish I had gotten some of your talent:)blessings to you and family.t.
Dear Sophia,
Thank you for the product update. I am fortunate to have many of your lovely notecards to share with friends and family. I will keep a set to frame in my new house. Please let me know about the plates and platters…I have a friend with 6 kids.
Your fan,
Kelly
Miss Sophia,
Your feelings of home and imparting tradition to my children are shared dear sister in Christ. This Saturday morning I am awake before the house starts to come alive with the sounds of active children and husband – only the coffee is perking. I am alway looking for ways to bring special family tradtions into our lives that my children will look back and hold onto. That is whay I was interested in your plates.
I met you briefly at Shine last year buying note cards and the adorable book about your boys. I appreciate your art and your writing (book & blog). I look forward to meeting you again at Shine next year. Kelly
Kelly
Thanks so much for your kind words, Sophia! I feel so honoured that you did a post about Such Things! I feel so blessed that God has allowed me to meet so many awesome Christian women through blogging-like you!
Yummm, that sounds lovely. I have just recently started doing some more homey cooking myself. I used to travel all over the place for work, and rarely cooked for about 7 years. I think I was actually blessed by losing my job last year, and now, I’m learning how to make chutneys, preserves and other wonderful things from my dear neighbors, who don’t mind helping a city girl out in the country – LOL.
You have a lovely blog. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hello. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story about Joshua. I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes. We just adopted our first child, a son. I can’t even imagine . . .
My parents lost their son (my brother) in April of 2005. He was 33. Mark was killed in a motorcycle accident. I think it must be the worst kind of pain to lose a child at any age. It’s been an awful ache to watch my parents suffer. But, like you, they know the love of Christ and where Mark is now.
God bless you.
Susan

Sophia, I am so glad you wrote to the Travolta’s. My heart has been so heavy since learning of their loss and I had tried to email them myself right after I heard. I just wanted to try and contact them to let them know from a grandmother’s loss how much we grieved with them. They may not get my email either but I mentioned Dare2shine so I hope they will. God is our true resource in times like these, but it does help to share with others who have traveled on the same road. Love, Lynn

I’m curious to what i’m letting myself in for when i promised my 3 year old a ben 10 room…
beautiful stuff! i remember you were a very talented artist even back in high school! very impressive
Hi Susan! I used to paint entire rooms for kids, but noticed how often my boys change their minds, so I opted to do a trompe l’oeil window scene instead. I have had to change the scene 3 times, but it is easier than an entire room! I drew on the character Ben 10, and outlines of some of his favorite aliens in the distance(I do not really like), and let him do the painting. I added the final pic, but keep in mind, he did most of the pntg. I would recommend a small window. Let the accessories do the rest!
Thank you Robert!

Hello Sophie,
I would love to hear from you, I do not have your new number, call me when you get a chance, Love your work!!
What an insightful post. Thank you. I have some students that are considered ADHD and it does bother me that medication is the solution that they give.
These are so great! you have enormous talent! My favorite is the “Marsh”….But others are so appealing.
Thanks so much for being a part of the Painter Mommy Valentine’s Giveaway Bash. We had a lot of great comments on your artwork. You are extremely gifted and talented. Thanks again, Dawn (Painter Mommy)
BEAUTIFUL!!! Your talent is a true blessing. Congrats on being featured on CWO.
Smiles,
Debra : )
Thank you! and thank you!
Those are incredible! All the art I have seen here jumps off the screen because of the field of depth you capture and the use of light and shadows. Cravaggio was able to use that style to create some truly lifelike paintings. Very well done, and I look forward to your tweets…

Wow! You are a great artist. I was thinking of doing a porthole mural in my children’s bathroom but I can’t paint. It must be great to be able to use a natural gift to make a living.

My son Sam was diagnosed with IDIC15 in May 2008. For the first few months I walked around in a fog. To this day not a minute goes by that I don’t think of him or what the future has in store. Will he ever be able to talk? Will he have friends?
My wife endures 13 different therapy sessions a week and has an extremely positive outlook. I understand that our job is to care for Sam and provide as best as we can for him. I pray on a nightly basis that God will cure him and he will be perfectly fine. Sometimes I have blind faith, almost childlike, and days like today when I see kids running around and talking that are his age it just tears my apart inside.
Your story is amazing and your family’s strength is somethng I would like to shoot for.
Mike
Wow! Your work is awesome. I love all the garden and bird stuff.
Sophia, what a great article! I’ll be willing to bet he knows how to yodel!! Love you, Lynn
Correction!!
That is so true! I see people everyday so bent on focusing on all that they “hear” and ignoring the truth in their lives. I am constantly reminded of a woman I met last summer. She had a sales tent at a local festival next to our campaign tent. She told us that 2008 had been slow for business, but summed it up with “I wish the media would stop telling people they are broke.” She was so right…then and now.
And I also have a 6 yr old who thinks everything is a crisis. Sometimes I think she intentionally hurts herself to get attention (which is a bit scary and I am working to nip that in the bud). If she even thought she had a splinter, she would be wailing and blubbering, “I don’t want to die.” Very dramatic.
Thanks for this inspiring post. It is so refreshing to read about other sisters in Christ. It’s easy to feel His joy in the spring!
Mike’s open and honest response, coupled with Sophia’s raw and heartfelt article about Joshua, nudged something in me. That is, they both reminded me of the simple power of your own story, your personal testimony.
This perspective is really fresh for me as I have just come out of a 4-day retreat called “Anglican 4th Day”, which is similar to “Cursillo” or “Walk to Emmaus.” We heard 10’s of messages, did summaries of them, made posterboard art depicting what we learned, sang many songs, ate many meals and prayed many prayers. But it wasn’t the messages that touched me the deepest. It was the personal testimonies contained within. Testimonies have a palpable, visceral quality that gets past my mental defenses, my understanding, and they just move me in a place that is deeper than simple thought.
My heart was shaken awake by them at Camp Suwannee and I have been moved again, deeply, by this blog. Thank you both for sharing your stories. They bring to mind a song.
“I go to the Rock of my salvation.
I go to the Stone that the builders rejected.
I run to the Mountain, and the Mountain stands by me.
The earth all around is sinking sand, on Christ the Solid Rock I stand.
When I need a shelter, when I need a friend, I go to the Rock.”
Hebrews 4:15 says, “we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.” No, it says He “was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” And then goes on to encourage us to go to the Rock. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
In Him, His mercy and His grace, I’m never giving up,
Roy
Sophie,
Your quote from Roman’s 12:6 that accompanied ‘Dare to Share Your Gifts’ reminds me of a seldom quoted scripture referring to God’s gifts.
Exodus 31:3-5.
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver , in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.”
So, Sophie, your work is a gift of the Spirit…praise His holy name!
Thank you Roy for blessing me today!
where is Winnie the Pooh? That is just darling and, of course, my favorite!
Hi! I never got any good pics of that wall, but will have to ask Kim for them. Thanks!
It is so interesting to read the loving way you talk about your faith and family. Love, Mary Helen

I just wanted you to know you are in my prayers. I’m homeschooling my three boys, and although my boys are younger – I know where you are coming from. My husband and I seriously considered putting them in school and me working full time because of the economy. It’s hard to give everything over to God, isn’t it? But I’ve always said I will do what’s best for our family. As you are lead on this new path I know there is hope, opportunity, and peace for you and your family. Blessings.
Thank you for your kindness! You are right, and we can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens us. We do feel called to make this move, after 9 years of homeschooling, so I am trusting it is in God’s hands. God Bless you in all of your boy blessings!
We hope to be there! We are so excited and will be prayer for you and this event!

You’re such a softy! Unfortunately most people don’t think the way you do and although you are trying to be kind by charging so little many people will devalue your book and think, ‘If it’s that cheap than it must be no good.’ I encourage you to charge based on the value of your work – your book could and will change lives – that’s worth something! Don’t think book store prices. Online products sell for much more. I know it sounds contradictory but I’ve been studying this for sometime. Consumers are willing to pay much more for an e-book than they are for a hardcover – go figure! I would encourage you to try different prices over periods of time and see what sell best. Start at $19.97 – go ahead, give it a shot and then watch what happens! Jan

My dear friend, Sophia! What a wonderful artical about your sweet husband, Robert! Of course I love the picture of you and Robert, Paige and Charles in my “big-little” kitchen so filled with love!!!! These are the precious times that we will remember when we are in our “rocking chair” time of life.
Kathy- So looking forward to the next time we are all together!! Wherever you are- there’s the party!
Sophia, I just love reading about your wildmen. What a beautiful story about Robert. You are so blessed to have him and your wonderful boys. Robert always takes great care of my customers and I’ll definately have to stop by the store one saturday when he is cooking. Ask him to shoot me an e-mail the next time he cooks. And one of these days I really am going to have him (or his paver guy) build me a patio.
THx Maureen! Will b sure to let you know about the cooking. I am excited to help him make that happen consistently! The customers will be blessed and he loves to do it!
Wow, Sophia, what a beautiful reminder that we need to honor and appreciate our husbands as God made them. So different from us, but yet so perfect to complete us and vice versa. He sounds like a totally cool dude! How blessed you are! Amen!
What a great story Sophia. Thanks for giving us a great reminder to truly appreciate our awesome men. They are such a blessing!
They are absolutely adorable!
Sophia,

Since our first Significance meeting I also have discovered yoga at Life’s Journey Yoga and Wellness. I just finished the beginning yoga series and tonight will start Yoga Basics 1. I can’t wait. Yoga Day at Life’s Journey was also wonderful. After a relaxing yoga class, Penny gave us a juicing demonstration w/samples of green juice & smoothies. It was all so good that when I went home I pulled out my juicer that had never been used and have juiced almost daily since. I am definately hooked on yoga and Life’s Journey Yoga and Wellness. The instructors couldn’t be nicer and the whole place has a very homey feeling.
